About Moonstone

Moonstone is often said to have an opalescence. Broadly this means it has a visible "shimmer" which may be described as a "rainbow" effect, an internal reflection of light appearing just under or above the stone's surface. This is sometimes referred to as "colour play". This effect is created by light reflecting off the layers of different stone (albite and orthoclase) within in the moonstone itself. Moonstone is milky in appearance, but translucent stones can be found. Moonstone can come in many different colours and you may see Blue, Rainbow, Green and Pink varieties available. Blue moonstone is probably the most sought after, and therefore most expensive. Rainbow moonstone can be found at more reasonable prices. The name rainbow doesn't necessarily mean the stone will have all colours, it rather means that the stone has a rainbow effect when the light catches it. Pink moonstones may actually appear creamy coloured, all the way to peach coloured. In particular though, the pink moonstones should have a white "sheen" as opposed to a rainbow or blue sheen.

Also part of the feldspar family are orthoclase, amazonite and sunstone, which is growing in popularity these days. Sunstone has a shimmering orange to brown colour, similar to a burning sun, hence the name.

Typical Moonstone Uses

Moonstone offers jewellery makers fascinating and sometimes challenging gemstones to work with. The shimmer of these stones creates an optical effect than can be used to stunning effect in a range of jewellery pieces. Moonstone is traditionally thought to be a bringer of good luck. It is also said to be a symbol of passion, given as a gift by lovers. Moonstone can be quite brittle and it is more common to find beads, oval or cabochon stones than faceted stones.
